A lot going on as I prepare to go to Australia so in addition to the reading for the PKD award I've been treating myself to some comfort food. I've been rereading Georgette Heyer, and remembering how much I love those books, and that she was a great writer. She basically invented the Regency Romance, but her books were so much more. THE MASQUERADERS is set in 18th England shortly after the failed rebellion to place Bonny Prince Charlie on the throne.
Aside from the fact I love the story and the characters it's a tour de force of writing ability. Heyer was able to effortlessly change POV sometimes mid-page. She is also juggling six (might be seven) points of view in a relatively short book. Granted some of those POV's aren't used heavily, but the fact she could do so cleanly and easily is testament to her abilities.
If you haven't discovered the joys of Heyer here's the short list of my favorites.
The Grand Sophy
The Masqueraders
These Old Shades
A Civil Contract
The Black Moth
The Talisman Ring
Cotillion
Actually, this isn't working. I would have ended up listing almost all of them. It probably would have been better to have listed the ones I like the least. It would have been a shorter list.
