I may have mistakingly picked up this book hoping for more of the kind of stories I found in Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies, which I admit was unfair. I was very disappointed in this collection of short stories not because I don't believe these are stories to be shared or because I don't respect the difficult choices the young women in those stories had to make. Ultimately, I put the book down because it lacked poety. What I mean is that it lacked turns of phrase that made me stop and read them again. I never found even a snippet of writing I wanted to write down and keep forever. It was an accomplishment for me to admit this and decide to stop reading the book even though I was more than halfway through. I am glad to see that others on goodreads will disagree with me because I so wanted to like this collection.
