** spoiler alert **
I knew that a new book was out and this was on the library’s new fiction self so I didn’t think anything of it until I started reading then realized it was new to the library but in fact is OLD. This is from 1995 and is the third in the series (that now has nearly 30 books). It was different going back to the beginning when Eve and Roarke aren’t yet the team they’ll become and for that matter this is the first appearance of Peabody.

Eve Dallas is a tough detective in the near future (like 100 years into the future or less I think). She catches a case, the murder of Cicely Towers. Towers is a prominent lawyer. She’s worked with Eve and she was good friends with Eve’s boss. Towers also has ties to Roarke, the billionaire who’s in love with Eve, much to her consternation and confusion (apparently Eve can’t remember her own tragic history at this point and as often as it comes up in later books that’s a good thing).

There are good suspects, Towers ex-husband in a money bind, her son and future son-in-laws both of whom gamble, just about anyone Towers put away but as other high-powered women start dying Eve puts herself out at bait being a high-powered woman getting lots of media attention. Like most ‘In Death’ books, there’s nothing deep to this but as always it’s an entertaining story.
