Very powerful. The scope of the story is broader than was the case in The Hunger Games, and the characters continue to grow. More than one writer has noted that a key to creating strong fiction is to create deeply interesting and appealing characters, then do terrible things to them and see how they cope, and the author does so in ways more harrowing than most I've read.
