This was an audio and turned out to be better than I thought it would. I love the narration by Ian McKellon, I love his voice and accent.

Stella is the deputy superintendent's wife at an asylum. One of the inmates works in their garden and Stella sees and talks to him every day. At a dance that the asylum gives once a year, Stella dances with the inmate and it's obvious that he is interested in her. She succumbs to his charms and an affair begins. When he escapes, Stella is left wondering if he used her or if he truly loves her.
