Double Fault
by Lionel Shriver
by Lionel Shriver
I bought this because I'm going to hear Lionel Shriver in the Edinburgh International Book Festival and wanted a broader view of her work. I was full of admiration for We Need to Talk about Kevin, but this one was disappointing. It tells the story of a young couple who are both tennis players. Success and failure bring out characteristics in them that affect their relationships as well as their careers. I did recognise the deep truths about gender issues and family influences and all the psychological stuff Shriver weaves in, but it was a long slog which ultimately left me feeling jaded. But she's gathered a lot of good reviews so it might just be that it's another man's meat, not mine.
