If I had previously read all of Josef Škvorecký prior books, I might have enjoyed and appreciated this book more. Unfortunately, I had not and so this book left me feeling a little lost, a little empty, and at times, a little confused. I would not recommend reading this if you have not read Škvorecký's previous work, particularly The Engineer of Human Souls.

Czarny Pies Quite right. You need to have read not one but several of Skvorecky's novels before this one. He makes not the slightest concession to the reader unfamiliar with Danny Smiricky and his gang.
