Very interesting 19th century fiction loosely based on Zola's life and the lives of his friends, the impressionists.

The main character is Claude Monet but with more drama, crises, and fatalism.

The story is very 19th century in telling: think Dickens, Twain, etc.

Zola fell out with Monet, Manet, Cezanne, and Renoir after this book and the dramatic twists seem to explain why.
