I do not recommend anyone begin this book who has not already completed Sugar Daddy. The character of Hardy Cates is a complex one, and Lisa Kleypas' trick of telling the entire story from a single point of view does not give us as much insight into other characters' motivations as one might hope.
Because of the priveleged upbringing, and because of the plot, I did not connect to Haven Travis very well. I sympathized but was unable to empathize. I do not think what she endured diminishes her, but in real life I feel it would have taken years of counseling for a person like her to recover to the point she achieved in months.
I was really impressed by her brothers' actions throughout the book, and want to read more about them. I still enjoyed the book a lot, and would highly recommend it.

I read it without reading the first book and was still able to enjoy it a lot. Sugar Daddy has never appealed to me, so I skipped it and went straight to books 2 and 3. I did miss not having the full story on Hardy and missing out what happens in the first book, but not enough that I wanted to go and read it.
