It's quite fitting that my 100th book of the 1001 books list is another of those middle aged men in a crisis books. But Hanif Kureshi has a new take on this oeuvre - the protagonist is describing his thoughts and actions as he spends his final night with his family. He whizzes through history, through lovers, through therapy and children as he gambles with himself - if this happens, I'll leave, if this happens, I'll stay. And the effect is heart wrenching. A super quick read, but a moving and interesting one.
