Despite being part of a series (which I didn't realize till I started reading it) and despite the author's penchant for raised eyebrows (someone is always raising one eyebrow as a response in literally every conversation), this is a super enjoyable read. It's got everything- suspense, ghosts, at least 4 mysteries to try to figure out... and witty writing for the most part. The main character can be annoying, I mean how can anyone be 40 and also be too vain to wear eyeglasses?! To the point where when a cute guy comes up on her unexpectedly, she takes them off quickly and flings them across the room. That might be cute in a YA novel, but not when you're picturing a 40 year old. Throughout the whole book, she is squinting every time she has to read a clue. You'd think by this age she would have heard of contacts. Even so, the rest of the time she is so cute that you just sorta overlook it. The main mysteries were easy to figure out too. With all my complaints you may wonder why I gave it a 5, but really it was just such fun to read, and kept me up all night to finish it.

Happy Bookaholic "(someone is always raising one eyebrow as a response in literally every conversation)" Hahaha

I finished book #1 yesterday and have not yet read this one but the raised eyebrow began as a Jack (likely inherited from his mother) thing. Guess Mel picked it up too. They say people in relationships eventually end up looking alike partly because they imitate each other's mannerisms.

As for the glasses, Melanie admitted to being about 13 when interacting socially with men so YA novel isn't too far off in her case. Looking forward to the scene where she flings them off in haste.

Mary I completely agree about the eyebrows!
