Going into Richard Kadrey's "Sandman Slim" I was prepared to be a bit jaded by the "nihilist assassin antihero returns from hell with a vendetta" trope. But Kadrey does the trope as well as I've ever read, doesn't hold back or reveal his protagonist's heart of gold in the end, manages some twists, humor, and even a bit of poetry here and there. The enthusiastic cover blurb from William Gibson didn't hurt, either. Apparently the first of a series, more of which I'll be looking for.
