Honestly, I enjoyed reading these--in the same way I occasionally enjoy binging on chocolates. J. K. Rowling is good at creating plots full of unexpected twists, and she even manages to tie up her series in neat, nearly Christian values.
As a whole, the series seems like a jumble of action without much thought to foreshadowing, character development, or consistency of theme. One gets the feeling that Rowling created each book on the fly, leaving the series with obvious inconsistencies and uneven emphases. Quarrels seem to be Rowling's chief way to maintain tension from chapter to chapter. Far from growing as people, the three main characters seem stuck in perpetual, petty bickering for most of books 4-7. The themes, too, seem somewhat inconsistent, sampling many popular values. Although book 7 ends with themes of equality, self-sacrifice, and redemptive love, the first books seem to emphasize elitism and special power.
