Maybe my expectations for this book were too high, but I found it to be very uneven. I picked it up mainly for the bits about the French Revolution, but I found that part of be the weak link of the story. The back and forth between the present and the past was jarring and I was far more interested in Andi than Alex. Alex's story seemed really implausible and ridiculous to me, so every time Andi went all weak in the knees over it I lost a little respect for her. The story started off great and then really petered out, by the end I didn't really care what happened to any of the characters. And it seemed like Andi's problems were wrapped up a little too neatly. If I hadn't read A Northern Light than maybe I would be fine with the inconsistencies and the mediocre story-telling, but I know this author can do better.
