Though certainly not uber-Anglophile historian Johnson's best work (my vote goes to his exhaustive "Modern Times"), still this slender volume is interesting for two reasons: (1) It gives a heads-up to the reader about people Johnson considers heroic, encouraging further study. Indeed, Johnson includes a good "further reading" list in the appendix for those interested. (2) His choice of those who he considers heroic is interesting and sometimes frankly laughable (hostesses?), but this only adds to the interest I felt in reading yet another book by the prolific historian.

Finally, his writing is, as always, incandescent, and a pure joy to read, if only for that. It's like a wonderful meal: perfectly seasoned and enjoyed in great company. I for one, am now excited to read more about Margaret Thatcher, as well as Napoleon, two glaring blind-spots in my historical understanding. As a funnel to point us toward noteworthy subjects of interest, "Heroes" does remarkably well, even as it exposes the somewhat quirky choices of the author.

Recommended.
