Christie returns to the world and characters we first met in The Secret of Chimneys. While, unlike some of her earlier books, this cannot be simply dismissed as fluff or a romp it is not an example of good plotting. Indeed it isn’t really a murder mystery at all. The murder occurs early enough to catch our interest but much of the book involves the escapades of a good of upper class English men and women whose feckless we are supposed to find charming. The final unwrapping of the murder is so by the way that it is hard to believe that even Christie thought much of it.
