John Grisham writes about Law thrillers, but I tend to believe he actually has much distaste for the genre. I've read through a couple of his books and have notice several similarities amongst his main characters: in the beginning, they tend to be young, idealistic folks wanting to practice their love for the Law as much as any would-be civil servant would. Halfway along the story, they become permanently disillusioned and frustrated by the dark practices they've been involved in, and by the time you arrive to the concluding pages of his books, his former erstwhile lawyer characters no longer wish to have anything to do with practising law ever again. Take instances from the main characters in 'A Time to Kill', 'The Firm', 'The Partner' ... and as well in this offering of his, 'The King of Torts'.

The question is: if Grisham tends to have so much distaste for the law profession, then why does he write about it so much?

'The King of Torts' reeks from page to page of blatant greed that's often displayed amongst lawyers, and it isn't long before our main character, finds himself roped into the greed cesspool. I can say that the book was and is a rather step-up from his previous book 'The Summon', but in the end, I grew so bored with reading about lawyers arguing about buying Gulf stream jets and such that I asked myself - where was the thriller in this book?
