I enjoy books like this, which have two story lines. In one story line we have the mystery of the unsolved murder of Nora's sister Triona, and Nora's need to help solve the murder. A new clue has come to light, seeds of a plant called "false mermaid", which didn't grow where her sister's body was found.
In the other story line we have Cormac, Nora's boy friend back in Ireland, who is following the threads of an old story, told in a song, of a wife's sudden disappearance, and the possibility that the woman was a selke, a shape-shifting being that can wear the appearance of a mermaid or, take off her mermaid skin and appear as a woman. The wife's disappearance is blamed on the woman leaving her husband and going back to her life in the sea.
The question becomes what ties the two stories together?
