Appelt's "Underneath" is one of my top ten books ever. "Keeper" was not a disappointment. Poetic. Magical. Compelling. You love each of the characters and feel the tension of their lives...the simple joys of their lives as well. Keeper, Signe, Dogie, Mr. Beauchamp...as well as the animals who are as alive and key players - BD (Best Dog), Too (Best Dog Too), Captain, and Sinbad.

Similar to "Underneath" - I'm not sure which group of "adolescents" or "children" I would recommend this book to. There are themes that require a mature reader - subtle themes, but present themes nonetheless - child endangerment/abandonment and homosexuality. I'd like to think that my daughter would be mature enough by middle school to read this text and talk about it with me. We'll see.

Regardless...if you can't get your head around an "adult novel," this novel is worth your time...a spiritual journey about what is real... and about what is really important in life...
