When I started reading this book, it felt like a novel by Isabel Allende. Political context, historical facts, a brave woman, a bad marriage, etc. While I cannot say Angeles Mastretta has made the same impression Allende did on me, I liked the book very much.
It can get tedious at times with all the description of the political Mexico of the early 1900's, and somewhat frustrating for not being familiar with the country's history. But I have to say Mastretta did a great job portraying Mexico's culture and the different aspects of the higher political class.
