it was amazing
Read in January, 1973

There are few books that stand out in my mind like this one. I remember taking off to the woods behind my house every afternoon for weeks after reading this title to try my hand at living off the land. In my nine-year-old mind, I no longer lived in a rancher in the foothills of the Appalachians, but in a hollow tree in the Catskills! I chewed on a few plants (it's a miracle I survived it, considering that I had no clue if any of them were poisonous) and tried my hand at building shelters from limbs... but I always managed to get back into my authentic character when my Mom called me to supper.

Even as a grownup, I still have days when I want to live like Sam!
