Well I will read one portion of the trilogy at a time, as is my wont. The Trilogy follows Harriet and Guy Pringle through Eastern Europe during WWII. In this one they are in Romania and just married. Harriet doesn't really like Guy. Guy is obscure, he is a man of the world rather than a more inward focused sort. Another main character is Yakimov, an itinerant Prince who sings for his supper. Bucharest is grim but also the life of the British expat there is happy, in a close and feverish way. Everyone knows everyone and they are trapped together. Like the Decameron, or a hotel book.

Everyone is just eating and eating and waiting for Germany or England to make a major move in the war. Romania is neutral. Guy decides to stage a play and it looks to be great fun.
