pitched as a mediation on silence, it is more of a meditation on consciousness, and an awareness of the process of reading.
great book. seems to be drifting in and out of availability in canada through our distributors. too bad, really.
it is a beautiful book, but you need some patience, and a stretch of time to sit with it.
definitely not for reading in short bursts before sleeping.

there's a good q&a between Vila-Matas and Auster out there somewhere, which is worth listening to for V-M's thoughtfullness and direct authority on his writing project, and for the 1&a with the audience at the end where Auster goes a bit far in his answer and his wife has to step in and save him from sounding like he has open contempt for all readers.
