What a quotable book:
"Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes–characters even–caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you."
I really enjoyed this book. It has a very Gothic feel to it, without the romance. I am sometimes suspicious of books that get such a buzz by word of mouth (Hello..."Water for Elephants" anyone?). A first novel with this kind of attention can be a real let down. Plus it was compared with "Rebecca" everywhere I looked. All this needed was an Oprah seal of approval to turn me off more.
I couldn't be more pleased with a novel. From the suspense, to the language use, to the characters. There is an awful lot here to keep a reader busy in thinking and living this book. While billed as a ghost story, it is the living ghosts (the people who live on the edges with their own ties to history) that are the subjects here. I'm looking forward to rereading this story in the future.

I'm only about a third of the way into it, but I think this might be a book you would like. At least it is so far :)

(shame on you!) ;-) :)
