This is a book I have had on my shelf for almost 2 years so I'm glad that I finally picked it up. I didn't find this book engaging until the halfway point, at which time I really started caring about the characters and wanting to know more about them. I especially found myself caring about the main character Mattie and her friend Weaver. Honestly, I know that the book all centers around Grace Brown's letters, but that was my least favorite part. Call me heartless, but her letters came off whiny and spineless to me. I realize what her situation was and at that time in history the significance of it, but I just found myself skimming over her letters towards the end because I couldn't stand her begging and pleading anymore. I don't think the jumping back and forth in the story was clearly laid out or worked very well (and I usually like those kinds of stories). I think Mattie and Weaver will stay with me for a while and for that I give this story 3 stars.
