Really? This was written by the same guy who wrote the amazing Circle Trilogy? Sadly, I was disappointed with this one. It’s not often that a book gets such a low rating from me, but there was something about this one that really irked me. The plot was mildly Silence-of-the-Lambs-ish, but I didn’t find the serial killer to be nearly as terrifying as Hannibal Lecter. It wasn’t really suspenseful. I guess the whole thing felt cliched. There were some writing conventions that Dekker used that made me want to strangle the narrator (sorry Robert Petkoff, you did a decent job), such as, “there were three things that the BoneMan hated, nay, four things he despised…” over and over again. The writing seemed like it was written to a lower denominator of reader — but that might be the genre. I’m not one to read a lot of thrillers so I don’t have much to compare it with. Worst of all, I didn’t care whether the characters lived or died. And that’s never a good thing.

And then it ended in a way that really disappointed me. I know this was written for the general market, but it had a few Christian elements and the ending seemed so…lacking in any grace whatsoever. Revenge is not what I was expecting.
