This novel is beautifully-written and great fun to read. White can certainly write sentences--and Edward Frascino's original illustrations are just fantastic. Unfortunately, the text is full of nostalgia for 1950 gender roles with its characters both human and fowl (despite its 1970 publication date), with the result of an undercurrent of incidental but quite marked sexism.
