This book has an interwoven story of a modern character named Marianne Wiggins who is researching Edward Curtis, the photographer, with fictionalized accounts of some parts of Curtis' life. There are photographs from the author and from Edward Curtis scattered throughout. As far as liking it goes...the book was probably doomed when it misquoted the age of the L.A. basin (or of the Earth?. It was a while ago, but I think she said wrote 40 billion years old). The photos were small and the layout was not nice in my paperback version. And the whole thing falls in this genre of western-artsy-writing that I wish that I liked but I don't.
