I think fairytales and other children's stories really rely on the reader's imagination to bring characters and settings to life, but having seen Stardust first in movie form, I already had a vision of what the story looks like. Thus, it was really nice to have Charles Vess's illustrations to change my preconceived ideas again; his drawings certainly have this otherworldly quality which I find in a lot of Gaiman's stories -- a great match!
