She was considered the voice of her generation in the sixties; but she had a lot of problems: anorexia, alcoholic father; disturbed mother. She seems to continue having problems as an adult, no boundaries, full disclosure of every detail of her life in articles and on her website. She had an affair with JD Salinger when she was 19 and she became obsessed with him; he dumped her coldly after 8 or so months. She found out later he carried on similarly with other very young girls.
