I have read most of the works of Gerald N. Lund, but have never appreciated the physical size of the books (they are large to carry around) or always the time he takes to get to the meat of the story. My favorite book of his is The Alliance. His Work and Glory series had many fine moments.
I would agree with my daughter on her opinion that the book takes a while to get going. Trailers about the book say that it is an account of "Hole in the Rock" pioneers and their amazing story. While this is true, one must wade through considerable story telling to get to the point. I did however, become fond of Mr. Lund's characters and his ability to weave a fine story mixing fact and fiction.
