Discussed in How Fiction Works by James Woods for its sympathetic treatment of a young girl's sad experience with irresponsible divorced parents. James portrays the young girl's perspective on the chaotic adult world in a credible manner. She witnesses some heated adult confrontations. Her coming of age is helped along by a caring governess who lost her own child about Maisie's age.
