Sweet and Deadly
by Charlaine Harris
by Charlaine Harris
One of the things I like best about Harris' books is their sense of place, so I chose this book for a road trip to Mississippi. Because the time period is different, I didn't quite get what I was looking for. I'm not sure why Harris chose to set this book in the early 70s. What was added? Or did she set it earlier to avoid the high-tech forensics and internet research mysteries must take into account in the present day?
I also figured this one out more quickly than the rest. Okay, there was one detail I didn't see coming--something endemic to Louisiana, apparently--but I read the last chapter or so just to find out the details, not because I needed to know what happened. I usually have a good sense of how her mysteries will end, but I'm usually surprised by something. Not this time.

This book was first published in 1981, so therefore was probably written in the 70's. Ms. Harris wasn't avoiding technology; it did not exist at the time she wrote this book.
