Colfer's follow up to the first Artemis Fowl book keeps the action going. The best part about the series, however, is that he avoids the usual sophomore pitfall of letting the characters get stagnant. The consequences of the previous book are fully realized in the sequel, which keeps the momentum of the series and deepens the character development substantially. The only other writer I know how develops his characters so deeply across multiple books is Jim Butcher.
