In 1940's Holland there were a number of citizens who took in Jews and other targets of Nazi oppression, the Franks being the best known example, but there were many more. In the novella (this is a one day read) Comedy in an Minor Key Wim and Marie take in Nico, a Jewish refugee. Unfortunately, Nico dies while a guest of Wim and Marie (not a spoiler, because you find out on the first page).
Dr Keilson (who IS an MD and is still alive and practicing at the age of 100) tells us how the death of Nico and its complications, as well as life with their guest, forever change the lives of Wim and Marie.
