The Last Stand: Custer, Sitting Bull, and the Battle of the Little Bighorn
by Nathaniel Philbrick
by Nathaniel Philbrick
Having read Son of the Morning Stars and several other books about Custer I found myself wondering what else could there to be said about the topic. But, having read a couple of Nathaniel Philbrick's other books, I decided to trust his storytelling again and plunged in. I was not disappointed. Philbrick provides the usual background on Custer and Libby (with a couple of suggestive hints about his personal life I had not heard or remembered from other sources) but takes a different tack with his account of the final battle at the Little Big Horn. His account comes largely from the survivors of Benteen and Reno's companies with the action describing both the heroics and the deep flaws of both these men. The account of Custer and his men of course comes from the Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapohoe warriors who were interviewed, but he seems to give less page space to these accounts perhaps because of questionable translations. All in all, this was a quick read and a nice refresher course on the topic.
