This novel really brings the series out into the world, and the reader gets a bitter taste of what Salander and Blomkvist are really up against. Lisbeth continues to be a staggeringly astounding and fascinating character--you really get to missing her when Larsson writes so much on the murder investigations. The complexity and damning quality of Salander's past really brings to poignant clarity that she truly is victimized, but dammit if she won't fight back with all she's got. In addition, some softer qualities of Salander which we haven't seen much of in #1 come into focus. Overall a novel as touching as it is harrowing and suspenseful.
