I cried a few time while reading this book about an intelligent dog taken from his young owner and sent to Vietnam. The story is based on true events and I was horrified to learn that the govt. considered these noble dogs as equipment and left them when we pulled out. These dogs detected hidden enemies, booby traps, and ammunition. They saved countless lives and then were left. There are actual pictures from Vietnam of dogs and their handlers. These pairs formed incredibly deep bonds and the men were devastated when they had to leave them. I can't believe we not only treated the dogs so poorly, but the soldiers who loved and cared for them. Many felt tremendous guilt on top of their already troubled war mind. Great book! This author also wrote Kira Kira, a book I loved, loved, loved. I'll be reading all her other books as well. I would recommend this book to anyone but also YA reluctant boy readers.
