I love reading books that were published around the year I was born. Sort of gives me a feel for the times. This is an adventure story about two girls in England during the reign of King James III. There has been a dreadfully cold winter and hungry wolves have crossed the channel into England and are attacking villages and travelers. It is perilous to travel, but Sylvia is sent by train to her cousin Bonnie's house to live. When she arrives, Bonnie's parents are embarking on a sea voyage to improve Bonnie's mother's health, so the two girls are left in the charge of a governess. But oh! what a governess! Cruella DeVille mixed up with Miss Minchon with a little of Cinderella's stepmother thrown in! The girls would like to run away, but there are those wolves waiting outside...

This is the first in a series called the Wolves Chronicles. I'd recommend to any girl who wants an adventure story, and liked The Little Princess.

Roger James III? I'm guessing this is a different world from ours? He was a Scottish king before the trains arrived. Or was that just a typo.

Kathleen Yes, supposedly an alternate history of England.
