It was interesting to read about an Iowan family during the great depression. Each chapter was self contained and was a story within it's self. Subjects such as medicine (going to the doctor was rarely an option), waste not want not, wash day, special occasions and lots of recipes. With that said, it could hardly be described as a page turner but most interesting. The author definitely attributes her success as a college professor and as a wife and mother to her poor upbringing with a strong work ethic. There was no money to send her to college but with determination, she went anyway. Good read!
