I feel as if I have run a very long marathon... this book went on and on... I liked it, but can't help but think the author could have been quicker in its telling. Robert is in love with a woman who has been dead for a hundred years. He is a painter who is so obsessed with her, that he paints her over and over again. It ruins his marriage and other relationships and eventually lands him in a mental hospital with Dr. Marlowe who is somewhat sucked into Robert's life and loves. The story switches back and forth from this woman's life as a painter in the 1800's and Dr. Marlowe's life as he seeks ways to treat Robert and discover what has ruined him.
