Well written fantasy! This is the first of a trilogy, and if you enjoy reading fantasy, I think you will like this book.

Ms. Canavan has created a world where Magicians are honored, are sought out at an early age (but only from the wealthy Houses), and are trained in the arts to serve the King.

Our main character, however, is a slum girl, Sonea. She shares a very negative view of magicians with the rest of her "dwell" friends. They consider magicians to be an evil group of people who are intent on making the lives of poor people even worse.

On the day of the annual "Purge", where all slum dwellers are forced out of the inner city, Sonea discovers in the worst possible way that she has magical talents. The story continues with the chase of her life: the magicians must find her before her powers become out of control. Sonea believes the magicians only wish to kill her. And then there are the Thieves...who are willing to hide her for a price.
