Shorto is an excellent storyteller & his popular history approach brings the personalities he chooses to talk about to life. I would have liked to read more about the relationships with the native tribes (did the Pequot & Esopus wars affect Manhattan at all?) and the New England colonies (especially those who sent settlers to Long Island), as well as more about the trading that funneled through Manhattan. But if all you know about the Dutch in North America is that they bought Manhattan for $24 and then the English took over, this is a good start at filling in the blanks.
