This book is the literary equivalent of a fruit roll up... Somewhere in it, the real thing lurks but you don't quite feel like you've read something substantial. I did find this book engaging and liked the friendship between Wynter and Mac to be very real and heartfelt.

I do think improvements could have been made to this book with some editorial pruning -- a few of the many story lines clipped up a bit too easily -- but I think this was such an engaging story. It surely made me want to quit life and work in a bakery.

Paula Not sure the editors do very much these days (maybe they make plot suggestions related to the market). The new Annie Lamott novel (it has bird in the title) got a rave review in the NYTimes book Review, and I thought it needed much revising. So there you are.
