I maintain that the Bartimaeus books are by and far significantly better than all that Harry Potter stuff (just don't tell Karen I said that). I think it comes from not trying to write a classic... the result is of course a classic.

The Golem's Eye is the second book in this series, where once again there's trouble brewing in London and that annoying Nathaniel summons Bartimaeus to sort things out. In this installment we learn much more about the magical world and get a new POV... Kitty, a member of "The Resistance". She has a natural resistance to magic. But while she still despises the rule of magicians she is starting to get disenchanted with the resistance's methods.

My one criticism of this book is that there is far too little of Bartimaeus. The djinni is what makes the series so great. I have been told that the third installment has more Bartimaeus, maybe without needing to establish a new character Kitty has fewer chapters.

Jay The thing that sets the Harry Potter books apart from these and in my opion makes them a little better is the fact that there are no likeable characters in the Bartimaeus books at all. Whereas in the Harry Potter books there are a nice balance of likeable and detesable characters if that makessense.

Michaela Wow. "Not trying to write a classic." I never thought of that, but you're right. He wasn't trying to write a classic. I'm not sure if Rowling was either, but that's a good point :)
Oh, and to Jay - You don't like Bartimaeus???? Haha well no wonder you don't like the books! I am surprised, though; I mean, I didn't like him instantly like a lot of people, but he's one of my favorite characters in fiction now... Nathaniel got worse and worse but I felt bad for him and he eventually came through in Ptolemy's Gate (the best book in the series by far). It took me a while to get used to Kitty, but in the third she had changed a lot :)

Maria I agree with you, Michaela. I don't think Rowling was trying to write a classic. It just happened :)
