** spoiler alert ** Although I thought this book was a little slow to start, I really liked it overall. I thought it had a great message about love and beauty. In so many stories, a girl is "ugly" and when someone finally loves her, her inner beauty is revealed on the outside too. I never like those stories because they are a bit of a let down; if it's not necessary to be conventionally "beautiful" then why does her appearance have to change at all? I liked how the author didn't give Rapunzel/Susan any hair at the end because it would have changed the message of the entire story. I also loved the analogy of building a room inside your heart for someone else to live. Fairy tales with a twist are very popular for teens; in fact my library had an entire YA section for "Once Upon a Time." I think the appeal is that its fun to think about the characters from familiar stories in a different way.
