What a remarkable book. At once a fascinating character sketch of a not-quite-a-girl-not-yet-a-woman, a really gorgeous, sexy love story, and a critique of the inherent subjectivity of the narrative voice, I think that Atonement succeeds at all its of these quite ambitious endeavors.

Why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5? Because I feel like I'm giving too many 5 stars lately. And also because Keira Knightly is on the cover.

A lovely, lovely story.
