Lisa Hayden Espenschade I've been meaning to read this one... I'm glad to hear you liked it so much.

I'm still reading this, technically. It's the kind of book you can open at any page & start reading from there, since it's comprised of random musings and meditations, like Gasparov's "Записи и выписки". But it's great so far.

I love that it includes both Sinyavsky's own scholarly, educated thoughts and the everyday, down-to-earth sayings of other inmates, who are frequently suspicious of all things academic ("Он был ученый человек. Но - хороший.") So it's really like a ragged chorus of sorts.

Lisa Hayden Espenschade I haven't read Gasparov but looked through the book again and see what you mean about the randomness. It does look good!
