I suppose it's a truism to say that it's the narrative style that makes this book, but, wow, what a powerful style! I fell in love with Holden right away. He is everything that's charming about the kind of rebelliousness that stems from not fitting in but taking the result of that dysfunction in one's stride without overcompromising - as opposed to the kind that makes its statements as a pose out of pique or the need for attention. This is a masterful depiction of a naivety that knows, of sulliedness that does its best to keep itself clean.
