I like Perez-Reverte's intellectual mysteries, but this is something different: the first in a series of swashbuckling genre novels set in 17th century Spain and centered on the titular sword-for-hire, a veteran or the wars with Holland eking out a living in the Madrid of Philip IV. Kind of "Dumas lite," but pretty fun. This book had a few too many digressions on the glories of 17th century Spanish culture for my tastes, but presumably that will recede in future installments.
